Estimate steel and material weight

Material mass equals volume multiplied by density. A mild-steel plate measuring 1000 × 500 × 10 mm has a nominal mass of 39.25 kg using Tebami’s 7850 kg/m³ density. Material weight is a Free calculator.

What does the calculator estimate?

Tebami estimates stock mass from the selected shape, dimensions, material and quantity. It is useful for comparing plate, bar and tube quantities before checking supplier weights. The app calls this “weight”; kg and lb here are units of mass, not newtons or pound-force.

For a plate, multiply length × width × thickness. Convert all three dimensions to metres before multiplying by a density in kg/m³. For several identical pieces, multiply the per-piece mass by the quantity.

Worked mild-steel plate example

Length: 1000 mm = 1 m
Width: 500 mm = 0.5 m
Thickness: 10 mm = 0.01 m
Volume: 1 × 0.5 × 0.01 = 0.005 m³
Mass: 0.005 × 7850 = 39.25 kg
Two identical plates: 39.25 × 2 = 78.5 kg.

These are nominal estimates. A small thickness difference affects volume and mass directly, so use the actual dimensions when available.

Calculate it in Tebami

  1. Open Material weight in Materials.
  2. Choose Mild steel and Plate / sheet.
  3. Select mm. Enter length 1000, width 500 and thickness 10, with quantity 1.
  4. Tap Calculate. Total weight is 39.25 kg; the app also provides pounds and per-piece values.
  5. Open “How this was calculated” to check dimensions, density and formula.

The Workbench also accepts explicit stock dimensions such as 1000 × 500 × 10 mm steel plate. Review the recognized material and dimensions before relying on the result.

Density assumptions and limits

Tebami uses nominal densities of 7850 kg/m³ for mild steel, 8000 kg/m³ for stainless steel and 2700 kg/m³ for aluminum. These are the app’s assumptions, not certified values for every alloy or grade. Actual composition, dimensional tolerances, coatings and removed material can change the result.

Tube calculations depend on outside dimensions and wall thickness. Real corners, weld seams and manufacturing tolerances may differ from idealized geometry. Confirm stock mass with the supplier or a suitable measurement before planning handling or transport; this tool does not establish lifting capacity.
